Can A Job Cause Depression?

There are many benefits to having a job but there are also many downsides. In this post, I will detail the pros and cons of a job and how this impacts individuals.
Pros of a job
- Your bank balance will increase. Of course, the primary reason people go for a job is to earn money. This is no myth and it is a huge motivation for any person who has a job. I’m sure if you’re in your workplace, the concept of pay day always lingers on people’s mind.
- You will become closer to being independent. Earning money will allow you to live freely and in having a job, you will soon realise that there will be more aspects of your life which you are now doing yourself rather than relying on other people.
- Meet new people! When you do get the job, you will instantly be introduced to new people who you will get to know and they will become your friends. Not only will they be able to help you personally and help with dilemmas at home but they can most certainly help you professionally. These colleagues are new contacts for you and you will be prone to new opportunities.
- You will learn new skills and polish the skills that you already have. Being in a job, you will have to do tasks daily so this will inevitably step up your game and will ensure that you become competent in the field you are currently in.
Cons of a job
- Stress! You will be doing a job where you have to complete tasks within a certain time frame. This can cause you to be stressed and can make you feel down, especially if you work from home as well.
- You may feel tired and exhausted from the work load and you feel like there isn’t enough time to have fun and do the things you want. This is the case for most people. I would suggest to take some holiday or to change shifts. Do whatever it is you have to do for you to feel happy and for you to be able to do the things you want to do.
- Your mental and physical health may go down if you are constantly thinking about work and you’re always stressing about what happened. You may have had a bad day at work and you bring those problems home which means your life is not going so well. Try to keep the work load at work and when you leave work, spend this time to enjoy life and to spend some time with loved ones.
A lot of the pros and cons of a job which I have not mentioned above are conditional, such as: Salary, Job Satisfaction, Shift Pattern, Manager Relationship etc. There are many conditional factors which will determine whether or not you are happy in your job.
I always say that you should live life to be happy and to do the things you wish to do in life. Don’t be tied down or do something which you have no interest or passion in.

I think not having a job and having a job can both cause depression :), because if you dont have, you might be a burden to others , if you have ,you might feel limited regarding your physical , intellectual ,moral capacity compared to what s being expected from you.But I agree when you said that most important to stay happy and for that it is it to balance work and self care to not fall into depression . I think it would be another great topic if you can talk about how to not fall into depression at work. Great post anyway :)as always
Sorry, I wanted to still edit my comment when it was sent too fast, I just noticed I ate few words. But hope in general, people got the idea 🙂
Yeah your message came across loud and clear
🙂
Yeah I agree 👍! Balance is the foundation for happiness so always find balance in every aspect of life. Thank you for your kind words 😊
I have been on job for twelve years followed by one year off job due to some family reasons. I am resuming my career next week. That one year without a regular job has taught me that if you don’t have a meaningful objective that you can carry through your life, being off job can be rather more stressful.
I undesrtand 🙂
Yeah I agree, when I wasn’t in a job, my mind used to wander. Being in a job means you’re more productive
sometime….because of lot of reason’s
Yeah, there is not just one reason but there are many reasons why a person could fall into depression
The most important aspect of having a job is the money we walk home with at the end of the day. Having a job gives us stress but not having it gives us a lot to worry about. The thing is, just as you have said, getting a job or work that one loves can go a long way to ease the stress associated with work.
I fully agree 👍
Great Post ! It is important, to stay healthy, not to bring “work problems” home with us. While I was working, at the end of the day, I would put my pen down on my desk, in a certain spot, and then go home. The rest of the day was my time ! We need to set healthy boundaries between “work” and personal activities.
Thank you very much for your kind words and I 100% agree. Keep work at work and live life to the fullest
Great post.
Thank you very much 😊
Sometimes in a job that is ‘less than enjoyable’ it is useful to see how/what you are putting back into society. Cleaning bathrooms doesn’t sound like a jazz job but when you think about the difference people feel going into a clean bathroom vs. one that makes you want to cross your legs and find a bush to go behind, it can help reward your efforts. Even though you have to go clean it again the next day!
Love this comment. I agree 👍! If you know the purpose of your job, this will make it more enjoyable and will make you want to do your job
Good example! Value and wealth are defined by everyone individually, and can change in different stages of life (as it did with me).
You’ve brought out the pros and cons with clarity! 👏
Thank you soo much for your kind words 😊
Pleasure!

😊
Nice
Thank you very much for reading and commenting on my blog
You are always welcome.
awesome post .And yes the job could cause stress .Its because of the people around that causes the issues
Thanks so much for your kind words. I agree that the environment plays a huge factor in your morale and your emotions.
We have the resources, the smarts and the man-power to redefine what “Job” currently stands for. This form of slavery that robs most of us from really living.
In the meantime, since we’re so far away from that 👆🏾, let’s not let our job be one more depressing thing to deal with on the planet.
If you don’t like your job, change it!
If you like your Job, use it to help others.
And most importantly, don’t ever bring it home. 🤦🏾♂️
What an Insightful comment 👏! You are absolutely right, love this
Thank you,
Great Post tho 👍🏾
I think people are happiest when they are busy. Everyone should work!
Yeah, being busy definitely takes your mind off things 👏
Yes!
I’d certainly say without question that it is very much so a mixed bag of everything described in this post.
Yeah, everything is conditional really. If you have a good manager or a bad manager. If your colleagues make fun of you or if you have a laugh with them.

You’re welcome Kamran 😁😁
Unfortunately, it can, which I had witnessed it so many times, in my own case, as in cases of many other people that I know. This has become a world of pure greed and quest for money and other material things, pure modern despotism. This is why I gave up my last job in a search for a higher meaning of my life, ’cause I no longer can find satisfaction working as a slave in this corrupted human society…
Yeah, I’ve seen it happen too. Gladly I love the job I’m at but I do understand giving up a job entirely
Sometimes you just need to move on…
Yeah definitely, letting go and moving on is something we should all strive to do because not doing so can make it a huge burden for us
I live for an adventure, and life is one big adventure…
I like the adventure, I think that life is one big adventure…
depression is no fun!
starving may be
worse 🙂
Depression is definitely a bummer and starving is also horrendous!
Great post. Thank you! Michael
Thank you for your kind words Michael, I appreciate it 👊
Beautifully written✨ You made a lot of valid points. I have gained a new perspective on “work” after living a life that the end goal is to “work”. If I have a decent paying job and I can do exciting things in life- I’ve “made it”. Unfortunately, that is not the case- as you mentioned. The key is to have a QUALITY of life. You can have all of the money in the world and take the most lavish trips. It all means NOTHING if you hate what you do or how you “make a living”. Such a wonderful and honest post✨
Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot to me. And yeah, it’s all about having a passion for what you do otherwise there’s no point in doing it. Live life to the fullest and enjoy what you do! Have a great day!
You’re very welcome! Absolutely! Thanks- you do the same 😀

Appreciating hover on job, the necessity of getting a job/employment for physically and mentally capable man, is good to win, at least, the daily living bread.
But, it had been important mention the basic causes of unemployment. Off course there are several types of unemployment since man’s desire is unlimited.
Even on basic employment they may not enable manage their earning properly, because of the price increase on consumptions. So that, it’s better use alternation that help reduce tax burdens, enhance public revenue and that never violate the birthrights of man. Therefore, taxing the common value of land and accordingly reduce and abolished tax is the only alternation. From this possible identify what causes depression.not the job itself.
A very informative comment. Thank you for taking the time to come across my blog ☺
Hello, Kamran! I nominated you for the Liebster Award! https://joshuamakotoswanson.wordpress.com/2019/05/28/liebster-award-2/
Oh my god, thank you sooo much, I will get to writing this post today. My second award in only a few months, I feel very appreciative! 😭🙏
You’re welcome! I’m looking forward to seeing your answers!
Great post Kamran, I think it’s a vicious circle! If we don’t work we become depressed with all the bills piling up, and we can become depressed in a job we might hate doing!
What is worst, becoming depressed because we are financially broke, or becoming depressed because we are unhappy in our job? If you ask me our health is more important than both 😊👍
Thank you! You are right, you can become depressed with or without a job.
Happiness at the end of the day is the be all and end all. As long as you are happy, that’s all that matters
Very good post! Thanks! 🌸
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏
My job definitely contributed to my current illness. Lots of stress and bad hours took its toll. Would never go back even if it meant downsizing to a simple life!
That is sad to hear, I hope the illness isn’t too debilitating. I can imagine that a job definitely can have its toll on you
Not having a job causes chaos than having a job that you hate…
I can definitely understand that. I was in both positions so I know the feeling of both.
Hmm me too
Yes it can!!
I’m glad you agree with my blog post. Thank you for commenting and reading my blog post today 😊🙏
Your very welcome!! Thank you as well 😊

You’re welcome and yeah, we should all support each other 👍💯
Io lavoro.
😊😊😊
It all depends on your co-workers, I found. If you work with a crew that has a positive outlook and keeps each other’s spirit’s up, it can make the worst and hardest jobs easy and enjoyable. It also works the other way, you can have a dream job doing things that you like, but, if your boss or coworkers are miserable, it is very depressing. So, I conclude, it is the people you are around, and not the job itself. This is true physically as well; note how if you are working a job, let’s say, loading and unloading heavy bricks, and a coworker makes a funny joke, that the joy fills you with energy, and the bricks become lighter.
I do agree with this! Colleagues and your team in general are what makes the job what it is.
thanks Kamran, this sent from NEW site, old site no longer updated
Great read! 💕
Thank you very much 😊
YES OF COURSE IT CAN, WHEN YOU THINK OF THE TIME WORKING LONG HOURS FOR SOME UNCARING MANAGER, CHINA
china.alexandria@livingthedream.blog
I agree with this most definitely. If your manager is a pain and does not care for you whatsoever, then your job is going to be stressful
Depends a lot on wether you like the job or not.
Yeah most definitely, that’s the main factor in the link between a job and depression. If you hate your job, then of course you’re more likely to become depressed.
That’s why I would always advise people to follow their passion in life
Probably not but it’s common to think that things external to you can actually “change” you. Thanks for sharing
Hi would love for you to check out my poem about depression 🙂
Sure thing
Couldn’t agree more, it’s all about balance, not letting work overtake your life. If it does, no amount of money is worth it – speaking from personal experience!
Balance is the key to life! Thank you for your kind words 😊
Hit the nail on the head!
Thanks Lindi, I always try to provide an accurate recording of life today.

Hello there. Thanks for writing this. I am just new here in WordPress (2 weeks actually), and I also wrote about my mental health (or lack thereof). Here it is: https://kloydecaday.wordpress.com/2019/07/27/anxiety-attack-on-a-sacred-time/
Good job for supporting the mental health advocacy through writing. I appreciate it if we follow each other and keep on blogging. Thank you!
