When it comes to mental health, it is a very sensitive subject even for the strongest of individuals. Mental health is a real issue and there are so many men and women who have suffered from this and are still suffering from it. I am one of those who used to go through mental health issues for a period of time. It was a very dark time in my life and I thank God and those who were there for me every single day.

When you are feeling low, there is nothing anyone can do to help. You have such a negative energy towards everything and everyone even if they have done nothing wrong. You go to your room and just think about the reasons why you’re in this situation. People talk about the light at the end of the tunnel, but you don’t see that light. All you see is a black hole and you’re in the center of it.

You act like the same you when you’re around people so consequently they don’t notice how low you are in your life. You feel like no one can help you and no one understands what you’re going through.

The way I recovered from it was that I always used to write on my whiteboard a list of things I was grateful for. It was a very short list at the start but with time, the list started to grow. I started to realise that there were so many things that I should be grateful for and that life should be spent being happy and doing what you are passionate about.

Another thing I used to do was to just go for a walk every day. I would just walk, thinking about the things I was grateful for along the way. I learnt to find peace and happiness in being on my own. When you go on these walks and just experience nature and everything it has to provide, you will start to feel like a new version of yourself. A better version.

Find peace and serenity in the advice from other people. One person who I always look up to is Tyson Fury. He is a British Heavyweight boxer who had it all. He had the money, the fame and the world title. After winning the world title, his life took a dramatic turn for the worse. He would party, do drugs and drink excessively. I should also mention that he gained so much weight, you would never think he was the same person. He wasn’t interested in boxing anymore. Everyone thought he was living his best life but he was having mental health issues. His life was so bad that he tried to commit suicide.

One night in a bar when he was drinking, he thought to himself “What am I doing here?” He knew that this wasn’t the person he was destined to be. So what did he do? He went back to the gym and started to run. At the beginning, he couldn’t run as much as he used to because of all the weight he had put on. But he carried on. Every night, he would work on his craft to get back in shape and get back to fighting.

He came back and fought two rubbish fighters just to see if he still has it and he easily won both of these fights. He then challenged the title holder Deontay Wilder who was arguably the best heavyweight in the world at the time. One thing which everyone knew before the fight was that Deontay Wilder possessed the most power in his right hand than anyone in the boxing game. They fought and Fury outboxed him for the majority of the fight; slipping and sliding. In the twelfth round however, Wilder landed that vicious right hand followed by a left hook and Fury went down with his head clattering off the canvas. Everyone had thought the fight was over there and then. Fury miraculously got back to his feet with his legs looking strong as ever and managed to survive the twelfth round. The decision ended up being a draw but many people (myself included) believed that Fury comfortably won that fight.

The story of Tyson Fury just goes to show that anyone can be affected by mental health so do not feel like you are weak for being in that position. One thing we should all take away from Tyson Fury; everyone gets knocked down in life, it is the manner in which we get up which really matters in life.

Prove to everyone that you can get back up from the lowest of lows. It will not be easy but if you remember to be grateful for what you have in life, then you will be well on your way. Reach out to those who you trust and to those people who you know have your back no matter what. When you feel like you have a support system who will be there for you, then it makes life much easier.

    • Yeah it is very hard to get out of that frame of mind once you’re in there. It takes courage and for you to just invest some time every day to focus on yourself and your mental health

  1. The very good motivation to keep what you have, to be happy with the small things, then you will learn to make the higher values. It is very important in such situations and the people next to you who have a word to say when your mental health is disturbed, then by counseling your loved ones and friends, you can better cross certain psychic stressful situations.   2. When you are the depths of a mental health crisis, almost nothing helps. I spent about 6 months in bed one year and I have access to a good psychiatrist/medication. Support from loved ones or caring members of your community is invaluable. You don’t have to say much; just be there. Knowing that someone is at the other end of a phone or can cook you a meal is so helpful. Great post, Kamran. The more we talk about mental health, the smaller the stigma becomes.
    When working in mental health I liked to use the analogy of other physical illnesses. No one would query someone with Multiple Sclerosis lying in bed when low or a Diabetic having to take Insulin. Mental Illness is not a choice.

        There are soo many stories of people who have been so low and then have come back to do amazing things.

    • Yeah 100%! It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s going wrong but if you actually have the strength to see the good in every situation, then life becomes much better

  3. La vita spesso ci mette difronte periodi duri. E’ possibile che scivoliamo in periodi bui, quando non si ha la forza di risollevarsi da soli Γ¨ fondamentale la vicinanza di chi ci vuole bene, di un terapista, di un amico….Non bisogna mai aver paura di chiedere aiuto. personalmente sono una persona molto forte, ho passato periodi duri nella mia vita, sfiorando anche la morte, ma ho sempre trovato appiglio in tutto ciΓ² che di positivo la mia vita mi aveva regalato. da lΓ¬ ho sempre tratto forza, nella natura traggo ancora un’enorme forza, cammino nei boschi e rinasco, mi rigenero, e nella Fede. Ognuno di noi ha in se la forza, Madre natura ce l’ha dotata dobbiamo essere fortunati nel saperla scoprire o farci aiutare.

  5. So true, and so relatable. Especially the part about pretending to be your normal self around others so they won’t know. It’s so sad because you trap yourself and nobody even knows that you’re drowning.
    Like you, I was able to break this pattern I held for 10+ years, and it was truly a miracle. We’re stronger than we think we are. Thanks for sharing !

  6. A really well written blog. I lole reading other people’s views on mental health. People with mental health issues or illness tend to be some of the most resilient people you’ll ever meet. To go through the internal struggle but to keep waking up every day is an achievement. Tjanks for sharing.
