SLANT Listening is a technique which contributes to a student’s performance and enables them to take in as much detail as possible. SLANT stands for:
- Sit up
- Lean Forward
- Ask and Answer Questions
- Nod Your Head
- Track The Speaker
Below you can find the benefits of each of the different aspects of SLANT Listening.
If you sit in a bad posture and you are slouching, then you are putting yourself in a bad position and you won’t be able to concentrate on what the speaker is saying. If you sit up straight, this will ensure that you become an attentive listener and will put you in the best position to retain as much information as possible.
If you lean forward when listening in the classroom, then the teacher will be well aware that you are interested in learning and it creates a good image in the mind of the teacher. It also is something you should be doing in general because when you go for job interviews and other occasions, it really helps to create a good image.
Ask and Answer Questions
You need to be active in your learning so asking questions will help a lot in reinforcing knowledge and learning new things. Click here to learn the benefits of asking questions. If the teacher asks the class a question, then do not be afraid to answer them. If you are right, then it consolidates your understanding and if you are wrong, then you know what you need to improve on. Either way, you become a better student so it’s a win-win.
Nod Your Head
This may seem like it wouldn’t help your progression but it does a lot more than meets the eye. Teachers look for non-verbal communication to ensure that their lesson is being understood by the teachers. If you nod your head when you understand the lesson, then the teacher will know what stage you are at in your learning. If you do not understand, then this is where you ask questions.
Track The Speaker
You need to listen to the teacher in order to understand the lesson. Attentiveness is a skill which can take you far in life and if you are observant, then you can grow as both as a student and as a human being.
